As a pet foster parent, I don't get to travel much. My home is always filled with furry friends that are waiting to find their forever homes. Every two years, I make sure to get away from home for at least a weekend. To do this, I have to find a place to board all of the animals in my care. If you have pets and need someone to watch them so that you can get away, you have some many wonderful options. This blog will show you some of the options to consider for boarding your pets while you're away.

Cat Personalities And Boarding Options

If you are pondering whether you should find a cat sitter or board your cat while you are away, looking at your cat's personality can help with your decision. Some cats will enjoy the social aspect of cat boarding, while others might benefit from more structured care. Here are four types of cats and insights on whether boarding or a cat sitter will be best.

1. The Shy Guy

If  your cat shies away from others in general, they might be better off on their own at home. If you have two cats, sometimes staying home is best since they will have once another. If your cat is standoffish or might even become a little aggressive around strangers, they might not do well in a boarding facility. It is important to have a sitter that can come at least once a day and sit with you cat, otherwise boarding should be considered.

2. The Life of the Party

If you have a younger or active cat, they might get bored and act out if left home alone for long periods of time. If you can find a care center that will offer handling and playtime, your cat can thrive while at the boarding facility. Some cats are just more like dogs when it comes to their personalities. If your cat is like this, getting them interaction and stimulation in a facility will help them feel less lonely.

3. The Older Gentleman

If your cat falls into the senior category, you might be apprehensive to pack them up and have them stay at a boarding facility. The exception is if your cat is on medication or has ongoing health needs, since they will most likely be safer in a pet boarding facility. While your older cat might be upset at leaving home, this will be safer for them to get the care that they need.

4. The Princess

Sometimes cats thrive by themselves and don't really need others to interact with. If you are lucky enough to have a pet sitter that can watch them, they can stay home with their things and keep anxiety levels down. If you need to board a cat that isn't going to be on board with this process, be sure to let the facility know so that she won't be put in stressful situations such as seeing other cats.

While your cat might like to stay home in a familiar setting, it is important to really look at your specific situation. If you will be gone for a long period of time, boarding can give you more peace of mind. Whatever you decide, keeping your cat healthy and safe is ultimately  more important than a bit of discomfort on their end. Contact a local facility, like The Pets Place Animal Hospital, for more information.
